Rolling Straight Edge

The Rolling Straight Edge consists of a 3 metre rigid frame supported by rubber-tyred wheels arranged in two parallel rows.

The equipment is pushed along long lines parallel to the edge of the pavement and the vertical movement of a wheel at the centre of the frame measures depressions in the pavement surface on a 0 to 12mm analogue scale.

Sections of the pavement can be assessed based on the number of irregularities found.
